Student-Led Conferences

Dear Families:
We are pleased to announce Red Bluff Union Elementary School District will be conducting student-led conferences during parent teacher conference week this fall. In our District Advisory Committee, comprised of parents and staff that monitor and make recommendations for our district LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan), student-led conferences were a recommended practice to increase the effectiveness of the traditional parent-teacher conferences.
Why Student-Led Conferences?
- Empowers the student to report progress, take ownership and responsibility of their learning
- Involves the student in setting learning goals and identifying strengths and next steps
- Requires students to be present and active participate at conferences
- Promotes conversations after the conference between parent and student about their progress
What to Expect
During student-led conferences, the student will report on academic progress, articulate goals, report assessment data, when appropriate, and share examples of their work. The teacher’s role is one of a coach and advocate and most of the talking occurs between the student and parent, unlike a traditional conference in which the teacher does most of the talking and the parents does the listening. Often in traditional conferences, the student is not even present. If a parent desires to have a private conference with the teacher, it may be requested at any time.
Some of you may have experienced a student-led conference. In fact, parents with the experience share positive feedback about the process. For some of you and our teachers, this may be a new experience. For those starting the process, it may look like your student attending and sharing work. For others, several conferences may take place at one time within the same room with the teacher circulating to answer specific questions the student may not be able to answer and to support students.
What is Your Role?
Like the student, who prepares for the student-led conference, parents should be prepared to listen to your student and ask questions. Your student’s teacher will send you questions to review or provide you with these at the conference time to support you in your role.
We are pleased with the learning and work at Red Bluff Union Elementary School District, and this is one such example of our efforts to involve parents in the process. We know our students are eager to present their progress to you. Our goal each fall is at conferences.

Estamos muy contentos en anunciarles que La Unión de Escuelas Elementales Del Distrito de Red Bluff conducirán este otoño conferencias guiadas por los estudiantes durante la semana de conferencias de padres y maestros. Nuestro Comité Consejero Distrital , compuesto de padres y facultad que observan y hacen recomendaciones para nuestro distrito LCAP (Plan Local de Responsabilidad y Control), conferencias guiadas por los estudiantes son prácticas recomendadas para aumentar la efectividad de las conferencias tradicionales de padres y maestros.
¿Por qué Conferencias Guiadas por el Estudiante?
- Da poder al estudiante a que reporte su progreso, tome pertenencia y responsabilidad de su aprendizaje
- Envuelve al estudiante en poner metas de aprendizaje e identificar fuerzas en los pasos que siguen
- Requiere que los estudiantes estén presentes y participen activamente en las conferencias
- Fomenta conversaciones acerca de su progreso después de la conferencia entre el padres y el estudiante
Que Esperar?
Durante las conferencias guiadas por el estudiante, el estudiante reportara en progreso académico, articulara sus metas, reportara en evaluación de información, cuando sea apropiado, y compartirá ejemplos de sus trabajos. El papel del maestro es la de entrenador y el de abogar cuando se habla la mayoría del tiempo que ocurre entre el estudiante y el padre, no como en las conferencias tradicionales en la que el maestro habla la mayoría del tiempo y los padres nada más escuchan. Por lo general en las conferencias tradicionales, el estudiante no está ni presente. Si un padre desea tener una conferencia privada con el/la maestra, puede ser requerido en cualquier tiempo.
Algunos de ustedes tal vez ya hayan experimentado una conferencia guiada por el estudiante. En realidad, padres con esta experiencia comparten información positiva acerca del proceso. Para algunos de ustedes y de nuestros maestros, esto tal vez sea una nueva experiencia. Para aquellos que empiezan el proceso, se puede ver como que su estudiante tiende y comparte el trabajo. Para otros, varias conferencias pueden tomar su lugar a un tiempo dentro del mismo salón con el/la maestro circulando para contestar preguntas específicas que el estudiante no sea capaz de contestar y para apoyar a los estudiantes.
¿Cuál es su papel?
Como el estudiante, quien se prepara para la conferencia guiada por el estudiante, los padres también tienen que prepararse para escuchar a su estudiante y hacer preguntas. El maestro/a de su estudiante le mandara preguntas para que las repasen o se las dará durante el tiempo de la conferencia para apoyarlos en su envolvimiento.
Nosotros estamos muy satisfechos con el aprendizaje y trabajo de La Unión de Escuelas Elementales del Distrito de Red Bluff, y este es un ejemplo de nuestros esfuerzos para envolver a los padres en el proceso. Nosotros sabemos que nuestros estudiantes están dispuestos en presentar su progreso a ustedes. Nuestra meta cada otoño es la de tener 100% de participación de padres en las conferencias.
