What is transitional kindergarten
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a stepping stone between preschool and kindergarten. The optional program provides students with an additional year of preparation, so they enter kindergarten with stronger academic, social, and emotional skills needed for future success in school.
Assembly Bill 130, signed by Governor Newsom in July 2021, expands TK programs to make it available to all 4-year-olds by 2025-2026. The new program will be gradually phased in expanding the existing TK classrooms until it covers all 4-year-olds in the state. Pursuant to the law (Ed Code 48000[c]), a child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if a child will have his or her fifth birthday between September 2, 2024 and June 2, 2025.
Transitional Kindergarten is a program that:
- Serves as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten, giving children more time for hands-on, interactive learning;
- Provides children with the gift of time to learn skills that will help them build a strong foundation for success in elementary school;
- Teaches skills that were once only taught in first grade, but are now taught in kindergarten;
- Gives children the opportunity to spend time learning important social, emotional, and academic skills that will help them succeed in kindergarten and beyond;
- Provides young learners with a high-quality early education at no cost to parents, to ensure that they have an opportunity to continue learning;
- Helps children adjust to the school environment and develop strong learning skills.
Parents who choose to enroll their child in the transitional kindergarten program do so with the understanding that their child will complete kindergarten the following year.
