Google Cast for Education

What is Google Cast for Education?

It’s a free Chrome app that allows students and teachers share their screens wirelessly from anywhere in the classroom. Cast for Education carries video and audio across complex school networks, has built-in controls for teachers, and works seamlessly with Google Classroom.
The Cast for Education app runs on the teacher’s computer that’s connected to the classroom projector, and it doesn't require new hardware. Teachers receive casts through the Cast for Education app, and students share their screens using the Cast feature in Chrome.
Let’s show you how it works…

Install the app:

To install the Cast for Education app, please first log into your chrome browser if you have not already. There are many benefits to logging into Chrome. One benefit is, that this app will auto install on your computer since we have pushed it out to our district staff computers. Once you log into Chrome, you should see the “Google Cast for Education” program listed under your Google Apps page.

Configure it:

Click the app. You will need to set a name for your “Receiver”(this is your computer and will be the name students will select when they want to cast). You decide if you want the app to go full screen. Please deselect the option to send usage stats to Google. For now we will leave the “Display Background images from the web” unchecked. At a later time, feel free to do a Google search on how to set this up and what it does. Click “Save”.

Share with users:

Now that it is configured, you need to decide who will have access to it.

  1. Click “Share”
  2. You will see that you can add “Email, Groups, and Classes”. Click this field, and you will see that it automatically finds and lists the Google Classrooms you have created. You can decide to select a Google Classroom to share to. This will allow users assigned to your Google Classroom access to your computer to Cast to. For now I will choose to allow my Google Classroom access. We have 2 choices as permissions. We can allow all in this classroom to “Can Present”, which means they will not need the teacher’s approval before they start presenting, or “Teacher can Present, Students can Request”. This option allows users who are in your Google Classroom set as a teacher to present to your receiver with no interaction from you. But, any users set as Students will require you to approve their request when they want to present. I will choose this option for now. You will see that we can continue to add other classrooms, users, or email groups with different permissions(Add Greg). Click “Save”. You are now set to start allowing students(or other users) to start presenting through your computer.

They can now present:

  1. Now, how do we get it to show on the projector or TV?
  2. You connect your laptop to the projector or TV by wireless display adapter or cabled. You are ready to use Google’s Cast for Education.
